You bought a new computer. Congratulations! Now comes the part nobody tells you about: actually setting it up.
If you’re in Darlington, Florence, Hartsville, or the surrounding Pee Dee area, I’ll come to your house and get your new computer ready to use — including transferring everything from your old one.
When you turn on a new computer, you’re hit with questions. Create an account. Connect to WiFi. Choose your settings. Enter passwords. Allow this, disable that.
For someone who does this all the time, it’s not a big deal. But if you just want your computer to work like your old one, all these choices can be overwhelming.
Then there’s the really important part: getting your stuff from the old computer. Your photos. Your documents. Your bookmarks. Your email. That’s the stuff you actually care about, and the computer doesn’t make it obvious how to move it over.
1. Initial setup. I’ll walk through all those first-time questions and configure the computer sensibly. Not with a bunch of stuff you don’t need, just the basics done right.
2. Transfer your files. Photos, documents, music, videos — whatever you have on the old computer, I’ll move it to the new one. I’ll organize it so you can find things.
3. Set up your email. I’ll make sure your email works on the new computer and that you can send and receive just like before.
4. Install the programs you need. Browser of your choice, any programs you use regularly. I won’t load it up with junk, just what you actually need.
5. Set up your printer. If you have a printer, I’ll get it connected to the new computer.
6. Show you around. Windows 11 looks different from older versions. I’ll show you where things are so you’re not hunting around.
7. Make sure the old computer is handled. We’ll talk about what to do with the old one — whether that’s wiping it for donation, recycling, or keeping it as a backup.
Good question. A few options:
Keep it as a backup. If it still works, having a backup computer isn’t a bad idea.
Give it away. Maybe a family member can use it. I can wipe your personal data first.
Recycle it. If it’s truly dead, I can tell you where to recycle electronics properly in the area.
Trade it in. Sometimes stores like Best Buy will give you credit. Usually not much, but something.
Whatever you want to do, I’ll make sure your personal information is removed first. You don’t want your old computer showing up at a thrift store with all your files still on it.
Sometimes people ask me this when their current computer is acting up. Honest answer: it depends.
If your computer is 8-10+ years old, running slow even after cleanup, or can’t run current software — yeah, it’s probably time.
If your computer is just cluttered with junk or has a fixable problem, we might be able to save you money by fixing instead of replacing.
I’ll give you a straight answer. I don’t make money selling computers, so I have no reason to push you toward buying one.
If you do need a new one, I’m happy to give recommendations based on what you actually use it for. Most people don’t need an expensive machine.
I can also help you pick between Windows and Mac if you’re considering switching. There are trade-offs, and I’ll explain them without bias.
I cover Darlington, Florence, Hartsville, and the surrounding Pee Dee area. $100 flat rate covers travel and up to two hours. Data transfer from an old computer may take longer depending on how much stuff you have — I’ll let you know upfront if it’s going to be a bigger job.
Don’t let that new computer sit in the box (or half-set-up on your desk). Give me a call and I’ll get you up and running with all your stuff transferred over.
