Everyone you know is on Facebook. Your kids, your grandkids, your church friends, your old high school classmates. They’re posting photos, sharing updates, and staying connected.

And you’re not sure how to join in.

Maybe you tried to set up an account and got confused. Maybe you’re worried about privacy or scams. Maybe you just don’t know where to start.

That’s completely normal. Facebook didn’t exactly come with an instruction manual. Let me walk you through it in plain English.

What Is Facebook, Really?

Think of Facebook like a digital bulletin board where friends and family share updates, photos, and life moments. Instead of sending individual emails or making phone calls to everyone, you post once and everyone can see it.

You can:

Setting Up Your Account (The Simple Version)

Here’s what you need:

  1. An email address — You’ll use this to log in
  2. Your real name — Facebook wants you to use your actual name so friends can find you
  3. A password — Something you’ll remember but others won’t guess
  4. Your birthday — They use this to verify your age

Go to facebook.com, click “Create New Account,” and fill in these details. That’s the basic setup.

Facebook will ask to access your email contacts to “find friends.” You don’t have to say yes to this. You can find friends manually later.

Finding People You Know

Once your account is set up, search for family members and friends:

  1. Click the search bar at the top
  2. Type someone’s name
  3. Look through the results for the right person
  4. Click “Add Friend”

They’ll get a notification and can accept your friend request. Once they do, you’ll see each other’s posts.

Understanding Your News Feed

Your “News Feed” is what you see when you open Facebook. It’s a constantly updating list of posts from your friends, family, and pages you follow.

You can:

If you see something confusing or you don’t want to see posts from someone, you can “unfollow” them. They’ll still be your friend, but their posts won’t show up in your feed.

Posting Your Own Updates

To share something:

  1. Click where it says “What’s on your mind?”
  2. Type your message
  3. Click “Post”

To add a photo, click the photo icon before posting. You can pick photos from your computer or phone.

Pro tip: Start with simple text posts before you worry about photos and fancy stuff.

Privacy: Who Can See What?

This is the big concern, and it’s a smart one to have.

By default, your posts are usually set to “Friends” — meaning only people you’ve accepted as friends can see what you post. But it’s worth checking your settings.

Here’s what to do:

You can also control who sees individual posts. When you’re writing a post, look for the audience selector (it might say “Public” or “Friends”) and choose who should see it.

Watch Out for Scams

Unfortunately, scammers are on Facebook. Here’s what to avoid:

Fake friend requests — If someone who’s already your friend sends another friend request, it might be a scammer impersonating them. Ask your friend in person or by phone before accepting.

Too-good-to-be-true deals — “$50 iPad! Click here!” is a scam.

Requests for money — Even if it looks like it’s from a friend, verify through phone call or text before sending money.

Virus warnings — Pop-ups saying your computer has a virus are fake. Close the window and don’t click anything.

Common Beginner Questions

“I posted something and now I want to delete it. How?” Click the three dots in the top right corner of your post and select “Delete.”

“Someone tagged me in a photo I don’t like. Can I remove it?” Yes. Click on the photo, find the “Remove Tag” option, and click it. The photo stays on their page, but you’re no longer tagged.

“How do I know if someone messaged me?” Look for the Messenger icon (speech bubble) at the top of Facebook. If there’s a red number, you have messages.

“What’s the difference between Facebook and Messenger?” Messenger is Facebook’s private messaging system. Think of it like texting, but through Facebook instead of your phone.
